Fantasy Football Dos and Don’ts

It’s that time of the year again… the time that tears friends and families apart. Fantasy Football Season.

Here are some helpful Dos and Don’ts — for anyone from a die-hard football fan to a “they just needed one team more to make a league” player.

  • Do your research… while the websites give you a list of the projected best players, they don’t tell the whole story. It’s important to make sure your information is up to date because players get injured even before the season and it could dramatically affect the draft.
  • Don’t auto draft… Auto draft chooses the best player available at the time of your pick, but it does not account for your team’s needs, so you may end up with a surplus at one position.
  • Do check your players’ matchups and bye weeks… For example, if your D/ST is playing a high scoring team like the Panthers, it might be smart to pick up another D/ST for that week.
  • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket…. Depth wins. Sure, Antonio Brown may have a week where he puts up 40 points, but it is more important to have a balanced team. If your team is lacking in one position it could be smart to trade your all-star to improve your roster. It is not smart to stack up on only one position hoping that others will desperately want to trade with you.
  • Do be very active on the waiver wire… The draft is only half of what makes a championship team. Some players have a break-out year that even the experts can’t predict (e.g. Devonta Freeman) and they can help bring your team to the championship. The waiver wire deadline is usually 3 a.m. Wednesday, so do your research and hope you have priority.
  • Don’t be afraid to drop a player… Last year, CJ Anderson was supposed to be Peyton Manning bread and butter, but after several weeks of putting up no points, it is time to drop him. He’s just taking up space on your bench that could be put to better use.
  • Do stick with your gut decision, and don’t tinker with your lineup… Your first choice is usually right, so don’t second-guess yourself.

Finally, DO have a great fantasy season, and may the odds be ever in your favor.
